Vedanta Aluminium Limited Founded by Anil Agarwal (Agarwal) in 1976 as Vedanta Resources, the company initially collected scrap from cable companies in other states and sold them in Mumbai. VAL in Orissa In India, VAL had its businesses in Mumbai (Copper business), Rajasthan (Zinc), Odisha, and Chhattisgarh (Aluminium), Goa (Iron ore), and Mumbai and Mettur (Commercial power generation). In Odisha, VAL focused on Jharsuguda and Lanjigarh districts. VAL’s entry into Odisha was initiated in 1997, when the Government of Odisha signed an MoU with VAL (then Sterlite Industries Ltd.). The company set up and operated a one million tons per annum (mtpa) greenfield alumina refinery and an associated 75 MW captive power plant at Lanjigarh.
