Vedanta Aluminium Limited Founded by Anil Agarwal (Agarwal) in 1976 as Vedanta Resources, the company initially collected scrap from cable companies in other states and sold them in Mumbai. In 1979, Agarwal acquired Shamsher Sterling Corporation from the King of Nepal11. This company produced copper cables. Agarwal ran the scrap business and a cable company till 1986. In 1986, Maharashtra-based Sterlite Cables acquired Shamsher Sterling Corporation and renamed it Sterlite Industries (India) Limited. The company was promoted by Anil Agarwal, Dwarka Prasad Agarwal, and Ishwarlal Patwari. Continuing his expansion spree, Agarwal acquired an 80% interest in Madras Aluminium Company Ltd... VAL in Orissa In India, VAL had its businesses in Mumbai (Copper business), Rajasthan (Zinc), Odisha, and Chhattisgarh (Aluminium), Goa (Iron ore), and Mumbai and Mettur (Commercial power generation). In Odisha, VAL focused on Jharsuguda and Lanjigarh districts. VAL’s entry into Odisha was initiated in 1997, when the Government of Odisha signed an MoU with VAL (then Sterlite Industries Ltd.). The company set up and operated a one million tons per annum (mtpa) greenfield alumina refinery and an associated 75 MW captive power plant at Lanjigarh. It also invested money in a 0.5 mtpa aluminum smelter and a 1215 MW captive power plant supported by modern infrastructure at Jharsuguda... Niyamgiri Hills and the Dongria Kondh Tribe The Niyamgiri hills in Kalahandi district were home to two of the various indigenous tribes found in India – the Dongria Kondh and the Kutia Kondh. Comprising around 8,000 people, these tribes had been classified as primitive tribes.
